5 Consequences Of A Dirty Home And How To Avoid Them

Throughout the years as we’ve cleaned for many clients, we’ve noticed a trend when it comes to why people call us for our residential cleaning services. Most of the time when we hear from clients, it’s because they’ve overlooked cleaning certain areas of their home, and are now dealing with the outcome of those areas being neglected. Regular house cleaning is important for maintaining a healthy environment.

In this article, we’ll explain some of the consequences that can occur when these areas are neglected, and how you can avoid them by effectively upkeeping your home.

Mold build up in moist areas

One of the biggest avoidable causes we’ve seen in customer’s homes for mold growth is in bathrooms where moisture builds up. Mold can cause serious health issues if not treated early on, and if allowed to get out of hand, it can require a professional restoration company to remove it which can be expensive.

The best way to keep mold from growing is to always make sure the bathroom fan is running during a shower or bath. Also, make sure to leave your shower curtain or door open so moisture can escape. If possible, you can crack your bathroom window. If you’re already seeing signs of mold in your bathrooms, you can treat it with a mold killer cleaning product, or you can call our company, and we’ll come out and clean it for you.

Possible health complications due to dirty carpets

Carpets are the largest filtration system in your home. They collect all types of dirt, germs, and dust. You want to keep them from becoming airborne by properly vacuuming the carpet regularly.

However, if left unvacuumed, overtime your carpet can began releasing those germs. Thus causing the germs into the air which can cause breathing complications, and irritation in your nose and lungs. If your home has one or two people, we recommend vacuuming at least once per week.

However, if your home is multi-family with multiple kids, we suggest vacuuming twice per week. Usually Mondays and Fridays are a good way to balance out cleaning times. If you have pets, you’ll want to increase your vacuuming throughout the week.

More time and energy due to non-maintenance

This is one of the big repercussions we’ve seen from clients who’ve stopped cleaning their homes. When you’re consistently upkeeping your house, it actually takes less effort and time to maintain the cleanliness. If you’re not cleaning your bathroom for months at a time, it will take twice as much elbow grease, and products to get it back to a clean state. Some of the top areas that take the most work to restore include window blinds, kitchen cabinets, microwaves, bathroom shower/bathtub, and baseboards.

To maintain these areas, make it a point to dust your blinds, and baseboards once per week with a swiffer duster. Do a quick once over on your cabinets after cooking a meal, to remove grease and splats before they settle, and become harder to remove. Use a magic eraser once per week on your showers to keep soap scum from building up. If you don’t have time to keep these areas cleaned multiple times per week, it might be worth hiring a maid service like ours to clean weekly or bi-weekly for you.

Bug infestation due to old food crumbs

Neglecting to clean the kitchen counter tops after each meal, or forgetting to sweep and mop your floors, can attract uninvited house guests such as ants, cockroaches, flies and even crickets. Crickets are some of the most common pests and can be drawn in by food and other things. (For tips on keeping crickets away, check out this article by clicking this link). If you’re cooking with a lot of fruits or meats, make it a point to thoroughly wipe down your kitchen countertops, and sweep after each meal.

If you have other family members who usually eat meals or snacks either in the living room or bedrooms, make sure they immediately dispose of any leftovers and trash, and keep the carpets vacuumed.

Bacteria infestation due to improper sanitation

There are many cleaning products on store shelves these days, but not using the correct product for the area needing cleaning, can cause the spread of germs and bacteria.

Germs and bacteria that aren’t correctly sanitized can cause minor and serious health issues. Please make sure you’re using a certified disinfectant to kill bacteria, and following their directions on the label will help cut back the spread of germs and bacteria.
